The top two characteristics that come to my mind when choosing a table saw are accuracy and power. should be a high selling point for many users. The fact that the Unisaw is built here in the U.S. I hope the folks at Delta can expand the factory to allow them to make more of their products here in the United States. Watching a first class piece of machinery like the Unisaw being built by Americans for Americans in a factory in South Carolina was a great experience.

As the pieces moved around the building they were fabricated and finally powder coated before hitting the assembly line. Early in the morning the metal used to build the supporting cabinet was bent and cut from massive sheets of steel. While I was visiting the plant in South Carolina, I got to follow my actual saw as it was built from scratch. The frame and final saw assembly is done in South Carolina before they are shipped all over the world. The Unisaw is over 90% US-made, including motors and cast pieces manufactured in Wisconsin. Is it an open table on the left side of the saw (from the operators position) and what's sticking out the back where the guard mount often goes? It looks like a really long mitre fence too.Last year I had the pleasure of traveling to Anderson, South Carolina to visit the folks at Delta Machinery to see how they make the Unisaw. Thanks again for the advice!Something looks peculiar about the General in that pic, but perhaps it's just a reflection or odd lighting. Again as far as their overall condition goes they're really very similar. I had a listen to both running and they sound pretty good, all the levers and cranks are smooth on both.

Although I bought an Incra mechanical fence last summer anticipating this saw upgrade (plus it was a steal of a deal on amazon) so I'll be selling the fence of whichever I buy. Both saws are 3hp/1ph, the General has a bismeyer fence. I can't really complain though, it's served me well enough considering. I have it pretty nicely set up and tuned up, but obviously the Delta or General would blow it out ot of the water. Erik, I'm upgrading from a craftex I've had for maybe close to a decade now. I'd imagine your table saws do more work in a day than mine would do in a month, so thats promising. sounds like just standard wear and tear maintance really. Thanks for the input! Jay, that's pretty impressive considering the volume of work they produce.

Good luck, both are quality saws and would be a step up from a contractor's saw or other portable unit.

We like pics here so feel free to post pics of the saws you are considering as it prompt other considerations. Nothing wrong with 3 phase, you just need a VFD (typically $250 or so) to take your 220v single phase and output 220v three phase. Make sure that you don't buy a three phase saw unless you intend to get a VFD or have three phase power available already. Both of these saws were available in 5 HP industrial variants but these were often three phase. I would check the motor data plates in any case, and not just what it may say on the cabinet placard as motors are easily changed.

If you want to get serious you can pop off the blade and use a run out gauge to check the arbor flange as well.īoth of these saws are typically 3 HP, though 1.5 HP Unis are quite common. The upper surface should be smooth, flat and free of major rust or defects, though much can be done to improve things if not perfect. I would want to see the saw run, and listen to the motor and arbor for any odd sounds which could indicate a failed bearing (not a serious issue in itself), and I would also want to lift the top off (two person lift) to check the trunnions for any damage (in case the saw was tipped over, etc).īlade rise/fall and incline adjustments should be smooth and capable of being secured in any position (locking knobs not missing). What fences are on these saws, though these can be replaced easily with an aftermarket fence if desired. The later 350R came with a riving knife which is highly sought after if available, but I don't think they were made in the late 90's. The advantage of the Uni is that there are thousands of them out there if you need a new trunnion, arbor, etc where the General 350 is less common. The General castings are a bit more robust and you can mount any motor in the 350 whereas the Uni requires a proprietary motor mount that limits what might be available. I have one of each and the 350 is the better saw IMO, all things being equal. You don't say what you are upgrading from, but both are good saws.
